Lewis Latimer worked closely with Thomas Edison to create the light bulb. ( answer found on biography.com). The first light bulb had a base for it to stay upright. Modern day light bulbs screw in.

Even though Thomas Edison got the fame, there was still somebody who sparked the first light bulb. His name was Humphry Davy. He was an Englishman. Davy tried making his own spark of light that produced its illumination by creating an electric spark between two charcoal rods. This was called an arc lamp. It was too bright to be used in businesses. The light needed a tremendous power source and the batteries quickly drained out. Later his invention was used to spot enemy planes.
