"The Star Spangled Banner"

This month our patriotic song is "The Star Spangled Banner".  The lyrics are displayed and the students sing it every morning after the pledge.  We noticed that the lyrics have some words we didn't know.  So I decided to focus our first class blog questions around "The Star Spangled Banner". So kiddos, choose one or more questions to answer and comment on. 
***If someone has already answered a question and it is correct, pick another question to answer please.

Blog Questions:
-Who wrote "The Star Spangled Banner" and why?
-When was "The Star Spangled Banner" written?
-When did the U.S adopt "The Star Spangled Banner" as our national anthem?
-Was there a natioanl anthem BEFORE "The Star Spangled Banner"?
-What time of day is when "the dawn's early light"?
-What does "twilight's last gleaming" mean?
-What does "perilous fight" mean?
-What are "ramparts"?
-What dioes "gallently" mean?
**Can you give us any other cool or interesting facts about "The Star Spangled Banner"?

We have been wondering what ramparts are according to google a rampart is "A defensive wall or a castle or walled city,having a broad top with a walkway and typically a stone parapet

Francis Scott Key wrote it after Key witnessed a bombardment during the war of 1812 at Fort McHenry in Maryland.

Did you know that Francis Scott Key[the writer] wrote the song with 4 verses. Although, today we usually sing 1 stanza of it!!

Stafford Smith is best known for writing the music for "The Anacreontic Song", which became the tune for the American patriotic song "The Star-Spangled Banner" following the War of 1812. Cranium star for you!

Interesting fact: Did you know that the lyrics of The Star Spangled Banner originally came from a poem entitled "The Defense of Fort McHenry"?

In our classroom we want to turn some of the word in the Star Spangled Banner into kid friendly term.According to my google research, perilous means full of danger or risk.In kid friendly term, perilous means unsafe.

Did you know that president Herbert Hoover signed the bill that made the Star - Spangled Banner our national anthem in 1931.
